Chapter Seven

Nick stood in the throne room with Diesel. Nervous energy ran through him. He fidgeted and shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

“You okay?” Diesel asked.

“I am and I’m not.” He didn’t want to miss anything, but nothing was happening. “You ever go through this kind of thing?”

“I haven’t, but Piper did. She knew she had magic, but no idea she was royalty.” Diesel kept his hat low, obscuring his eye. “It’s a mess, but you’ll get it sorted out.”

“I know. I’m nervous, though. Like the demi-god shit has something to do with me.” He shook his head. “The man I believe to be my father is a gorgon, and I learned in the last twenty-four hours that my mother was an elf. I have no idea what that makes me.”

“That’s a conundrum.” Diesel settled on one of the chairs, not the thrones. “Have a seat. The old bastard likes to be theatrical.”

“Oh.” He sat beside Diesel. “Have you always worked for the court?”

“No. I was security at the hotel. My sister Genie is the manager.” Diesel rested his elbows on his knees. “I’m with the court because of Piper.”

“You married into it?”

“I did.”

He nodded. “Ever been married before? Before her?”

“No. You?”

“Nope.” He hadn’t been interested in it. “Sorry. I get nervous and chatty.”

“It’s fine.”

“You don’t talk much.”

“Not really.”

So they’d been put together in this moment, and he’d do all the talking while Diesel did the listening. Great.

A plume of smoke erupted by the thrones, then a flash of light blinded Nick. A man came out of the light. He emerged cloaked in a thick robe. He carried a long staff and inched over to them.

Nick gasped. Was he supposed to speak? Instead, he held still. He needed to wait -- he wasn’t sure why, but he needed to.

“I’m the historian.” The man held onto the staff with both hands. “You want answers.”

Nick cleared his throat. “I do and I would. Thank you.”

“Diesel.” The historian nodded. “Good to see you, my Cyclops.”

“You, too.” Diesel dipped his head one time.

“You can vouch for him?” the historian asked. “My Cyclops?”

“I don’t know him well, but if something is amiss, I will handle it immediately.” Diesel folded his arms.

The threat was a bit scary, but Nick would do whatever it took to prove to the historian and Diesel that he was sincere. He wanted answers. “Yes.”

“Very well.” The historian tapped Nick’s shoulder with the staff. “I knew when you came to town. I knew the gravity in Eerie changed.”

“It did?” He didn’t have any special powers.

“You don’t know who you are. Or what. You’re confused,” the historian said.

“I am,” Nick answered. “Very.” It sounded ridiculous, but he didn’t care.

“I see.” The historian bowed his head. “The story of your life is complicated.”

Not surprising. Nothing about his life had been simple. “I can handle it.”

“Can you?”

What was that supposed to mean? “Yes?”

“I see,” the historian replied.

The historian kept saying that and it annoyed Nick. Still, Nick braced for the story.

“Your mother, Amalie Wayde, was an elf,” the historian said.
